Rick Durrant

by Greg.Winfield

After graduating in Business Studies and following a year’s post graduate certificate in education, Rick taught business subjects in secondary schools for 10 years. He changed careers in hismid 30s by completing a Diploma in Management Studies specialising in Recreation Management. Rick worked up from a supervisory role in a leisure centre to leisure centre manager and from there to a contract manager for Wycombe District Council responsible for running their in-house leisure management contract.

In 1996, he moved this contracting arm out into a standalone leisure trust, an Industrial and Provident Society with charitable objects and developed Nexus Community from a single contract operator turning over £3.5m to a business turning over £15m from the operation of five local authority contracts.

In 2011 Rick led the merger of Nexus into GLL (Greenwich Leisure Limited).  He is responsible for developing new business for GLL  through direct bidding for contracts or working geographically with other smaller trusts.

Rick believes passionately in the delivery of community services via charitable social enterprise as it combines commercial business principles but for social gain and not shareholder profit.
